Joseph
B. Cartwright - 1909-2008
Joseph B. Cartwright, a former Ashland Ky., police officer who was
instrumental in establishing pension rights for Kentucky’s police officers,
died April 28 at a
Florida nursing home. He was 99.
As president of the
Kentucky Fraternal Order of Police in 1959, he
pushed for and helped win passage of legislation giving police officers in
Kentucky retirement security for the first time. He helped found the Ashland
FOP lodge and was part of Chandler’s security escort whenever the governor was
in eastern Kentucky.
Mr. Cartwright also made an unsuccessful run for Boyd County sheriff in the
late 1960s. He was a founding manager of Ashland’s Babe Ruth League and his
team, the FOP Reds, won the inaugural year. He was a lifetime member of the
Ashland Elks lodge and operated Cartwright Driving School from the late 1950s
through early 1970s. He was an avid golfer and owned racing greyhounds in his
retirement. He loved card games and swapping funny police and sports stories.
Mr. Cartwright, the son of the late Charles Chase and Maude Virginia Bonham
Cartwright, was born Jan. 14, 1909, in Bristol, Va., but was raised in
Ashland. He was a 1928 graduate of Ashland High School and graduated from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1932. He served on the Ashland Police
Department for almost 30 years and retired with the rank of captain. He moved
to Holiday, Fla., in 1979.
He was the husband of the late Louise Riddell Cartwright and was preceded in
death by his brother, Charles W. Cartwright ,and sister, Mary Catherine
VanHorne. Survivors include three sons, Joe B. Cartwright Jr. (Helen) of
Ashland, Robert C. Cartwright (Mindy A.) of Howard, Ga., and Randy Cartwright
(Pam) of Holiday; a daughter, Sue Cartwright of Holiday; four grandchildren,
Kelly Jo Cartwright Morman of North Carolina and Alex, Kaitie and Charles
Cartwright of Howard.
Services will be today, April 30, at 10 a.m. at Dobies Funeral Home, 4910
Bartelt Road, Holiday. Burial will be in Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens.

Woodrow Hall - 1923-2007
Woodrow W. Hall, 84, of
Ashland died
Friday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was born May 18,
1923, in Ashland, the son of the late Alfred and Martha Bishop Hall. He was
the husband of the late Mary Martin Hall.
He was
retired from the Ashland Police Department and was a member of the BPOE 350;
the FOP; was a Kentucky Colonel and an Admiral of Kentucky Waterways. He was a
veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne
Division.
Survivors include one son, Steve H. Hall of Catlettsburg; two daughters,
Priscilla Diane Jarrell of Angola, Ind., and Cheryl Jean Reimke of
Fredricksburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Dean Jarrell, Debra Jarrell, Yvonne
Reimke, Sean Reimke, Trevor Hall and Taylor Hall; and eight
great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens, with
military graveside rites by the American Legion Post 93. There will be no
visitation.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to Children’s Charities,

Roger
Gussler - 1931-2007
Roger Pirce Gussler, 75, of Warfield, Ky., passed away Friday, June 8, 2007, at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was born Sept. 28, 1931, in Ashland, Ky., son of the late D.L. and Bessie Gussler; step-mother, Maude Gussler; one son, Sonny Gussler; and one sister, Elwanda Franz.
Mr. Gussler was a retired coal miner.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Irene (Dingess)
Gussler of Warfield, Ky.; five daughters, Rachel (Forrest) Fitch of Louisa,
Ky., Willa Sue (Jim) Robinson of Warfield, Ky., Jayna (Chuck) Horne of Long
Beach, Miss., Darlene Nelson and Debbie Johnson, both of Mississippi. Also
surviving are three sons, Troy (Suzy) Gussler and David (Patricia) Gussler,
both of Warfield, Ky., and Bill Gussler of Mississippi; 21 grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two brothers, Lee (the late
Pearl) Gussler and Gordon (Dixie) Gussler, both of Ashland, Ky.; one sister,
Lita (Jim) Sexton of Kentucky. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m.
Monday, June 11, 2007, at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home Chapel in Warfield,
Ky., with Pastor Jim Horn officiating. Burial will follow in Fitch Gussler
Cemetery in Louisa, Ky.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007,
and Sunday, June 10, 2007, at the Warfield chapel.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Richmond-Callaham

Randall Bowling - 1947-2007
Sgt. Randall “Randy” G.
Bowling-Ashland Police Department (retired), 59, of Ashland, Ky., reached the end of his
watch and went to be with the Lord at 6:47 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007.
He was born Sept. 28, 1947, in Milo, Ky., to the late Lawrence Edward Bowling
and Helen Virginia Preston Bowling.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma L.
Testerman-Bowling; and a sister, Melanie Evelyn Bowling-Brown.
Surviving are his loving wife, whom he married on Oct. 24, 1978, Sharon M.
Hull-Bowling; three sons, Randall G. “Greg” Bowling Jr. (Joan Iden) of
Independence, Ky., and Stephen Ray Messer (Jennifer Crump) and Norman Lewis
Bowling, both of Ashland; and two daughters, Andrea Leslie Bowling (Paul Kirk)
of Inez, Ky., and Tina Marie Bowling (Terry Fryer) of Ashland.
Other survivors include his mother, Helen Bowling of Flatwoods, Ky.; a sister,
Sonjia Elaine Bowling (David Moore) of Worthington; a stepson, Nathan Hull of
Newport, Tenn.; nine grandchildren with another on the way; two
stepgrandchildren; and a host of great friends with the Kentucky “D” Gold Wing
Road Riders Association, Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle
Club and Fraternal Order of Police, Ashland Lodge 3.
Randy served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a sergeant with the Ashland
Police Department until he was disabled in the line of duty in 1989. His many
duties and assignments included training officer, Special Operations Section
(SOS) team member, patrol supervisor, commander of the Criminal Investigations
Section and founder, case supervisor and task force manager for the FIVCO Area
Drug Enforcement Task Force (FADE). He was a member of the Fraternal Order of
Police Ashland Lodge 3, past president of Kentucky IV and current member of
Kentucky XV of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club
and proud member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Kentucky “D” in
Ashland. Randy was a descendant of one of the first settler families of
eastern Kentucky, a genealogist and a published author.
A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb, 10, 2007, at
Ratliff Family Funeral Home, 1220 Greenup Ave., Ashland, with words of comfort
given by the Rev. Michael Hull of First Church of the Nazarene, Hemet, Calif.,
and the Rev. Donnie McKenzie of Cannonsburg Nazarene Church in Cannonsburg,
Ky. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Family and friends may visit from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The Fraternal Order of Police Honor Guard and officers, along with a
motorcycle escort from the Blue Knights of GWRRA, will escort the funeral
procession to the cemetery, where graveside rites will be conducted.

Gene E. Hemlepp - 1929-2006
Gene E. Hemlepp, 77, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, Sept. 2,
2006, in Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born July 18, 1929, in Ashland, a son of the late Paul and Esther Click
Hemlepp. He was a retired captain of the Ashland Police Department where he
served for 27 years. He was the captain of detectives, caretaker of Wildwood
Park for the Armco Steel Corp., investigator for The Commonwealth for Judge
David Hagerman and Stewart Schneider from 1988-1993.
He entered the Army in 1947, 101 Airborne Division. He was in the 25th
infantry division, signal corps and in the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. He coached
Babe Ruth Baseball for 15 years during which there was a state championship.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a special uncle, Uncle
Dutch Hemlepp; two brothers, Charles and Joe Hemlepp; and a grandson, John R.
Greene Jr. of Catlettsburg.
Mr. Hemlepp is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Barber Hemlepp, whom he
married on Aug. 3, 1952; a son, David Gene Hemlepp of Ashland; a grandson
Nicholas Hemlepp; a daughter, Robin Leigh Hemlepp Greene and husband John R.
of Catlettsburg; daughter-in-law, Vicki Hemlepp of Catlettsburg; twin-brother,
Jerry Hemlepp of Charleston, W.Va.; and brother, P.D. Hemlepp of Ashland.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at Steen Funeral
Home- Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. The Rev. Charles Stewart and Stewart
Schneider will officiate. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight, Sept. 4, 2006, at the funeral home.

Ronda Jean Stevens Collins, 42,
of Huntington, died Sunday in
Hospice House of Huntington.
She was born Sept. 13, 1963, in Phoenixville, Pa.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Morris Funeral Home in Wayne. Burial
was in Elmwood Cemetery in Wayne.

Ruby J. David Ott
went to be
with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, in Community Hospice Care Center in
Ashland, Ky.
Mrs. Ott was born in Ashland on Sept. 15, 1937, the daughter of the late
Bernie and Alice Fields Eldridge.
She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, William Ott Jr.; their
three sons, Bobby David and his wife, Sharon, and his sons, Nick and Ben of
San Antonio, Texas, Ralph “Bud” David and his daughters Evon, Emily, Katie and
Nikki of Ironton, Ohio, and William Ott and his wife, Sandy, and their
daughter, Krysten, of Ashland.
She is also survived by a sister, Louise Johnson of New Baltimore, Mich.; and
three brothers, Denver Eldridge of Catlettsburg, Ky., Phillip Eldridge and his
wife, Jean, of Westwood, Ky., and Ed Eldridge and his wife, Linda, of Ironton.
Mrs. Ott was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliaries of American Legion
Post 93, VFW Post 8850, Amvets Post 108, Eagles Daniel Boone Aerie 2329 and
Moose Lodge 701.
A memorial service honoring her life will be at 6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 29, at
Ashland First Church of God, 3500 S. 29th St., where the Rev. Mabel Johnson
will offer words of encouragement. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Gussler III (1975-2006)


Charles “Chuck” Fredrick Gussler III, 31, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Sunday
morning in Huntington, W.Va., following a motor vehicle accident.
Mr.
Gussler was born July 12, 1975, in Ashland, to Charles Fredrick Gussler II and
Carolyn Jean Nelson-Gussler.
Chuck was a deputy jailer at the Boyd County Detention Center in
Catlettsburg, Ky. He loved motorcycles and fishing and cared deeply for his
children, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charles Fredrick
Gussler; his maternal grandfather, Walter Edward Nelson; and a special friend,
Stephanie Menshouse.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two sons, Charles Fredrick Gussler IV
of Ashland and Justin Michael Callicoat Gussler of Indiana; a daughter, Hailey
Alexis Stewart of Raceland, KY; a brother, Jason Allen Gussler and his wife,
Heather, of Ashland; a niece, Emily Lorraine Gussler of Ashland; his paternal
grandmother, Deloris Gussler; his maternal grandmother, Bessie Evelyn Arthur
Nelson, both of Ashland; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends
all of whom will miss him dearly.
To honor his life, funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006,
with Tommy Romans and Ron Evans officiating, at Ratliff Family Funeral Home,
1220 Greenup Ave., Ashland, with burial to follow in Golden Oaks Memorial
Gardens.

Thomas
"Tom" Keelin (1922-2006)
Thomas J.
“Tom” Keelin, a lifelong resident of Catlettsburg, Ky., passed from this life
to be with his Heavenly Father early Monday morning July 17, 2006, in King’s
Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. He was 84 years of age.
Mr. Keelin was born May 17, 1922, in Boyd County, Ky., the last surviving son
of 12 children to the late Charles P. and Pearl Clark Keelin. He answered the
call of our great nation and served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World
War II in the Pacific Fleet aboard the battleship Washington and two troop
transports, the Karnes and the Wharton. He retired after 35 years with the C&O
Railway in the signal maintenance department. He was a member of Hampton Lodge
235, F&AM, and attended Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his adoring wife of 60 years, Pauline Crace Keelin. Together
they raised three children: two sons, Thomas M. Keelin and his wife, Linda,
and Terry Keelin and his wife, Cathy, all of Catlettsburg, and a daughter,
Robin Crum and her husband, the Rev. Keith Crum of Rush, Ky. He was blessed
with seven wonderful grandchildren and six precious great-grandchildren. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Keelin was preceded in death by seven brothers
and four sisters. In honor of Thomas J. Keelin’s life, a funeral ceremony will
be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in
Catlettsburg. His son-in-law, Pastor Keith Crum, will offer a personal message
of hope to those in attendance.
He will be laid to rest in Catlettsburg Cemetery where military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 93.

James F. Buckland, Jr. (1948-2006)
James F. Buckland, 57, of Ashland, husband of Linda Anderson Buckland, passed away Friday in Community Hospice Care Center.
Jim was born
Aug. 16, 1948, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late James F. and Rosa Lake
Buckland, Sr.
Jim was of the Baptist faith, a pipefitter with Local
196 and a member of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers at #1 Marathon
Refinery. He was a past president of the Ashland National Little League and a
member of Post 93, American Legion.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents are
two brothers, Tim and Otto Buckland.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Linda, are one son,
James F. Buckland III of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Kathy York of Ashland;
one sister, Theresa Ferguson of Ashland; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Alexander
of Ashland; two grandchildren, Jacob and Shane York; 2 nieces; and 2 nephews.
Visitation is Monday from
6 to 9 p.m. with
prayer service at 8:30 p.m. at Preston Family Funeral Home by Jim Smedley and
Jim Mitchell. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Community

Louise Justice (1942-2006)
Betty Louise Justice, 63, of Ashland, Ky., died
Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born Sept. 22, 1942, in Ashland, a daughter of
the late John R. and Katherine Swope Rice.
She was a hostess at Chimney Corner Restaurant and
Ashland Plaza Hotel and a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John H. Justice
Jr. (Susan Lea) of Catlettsburg, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Marie
Whittlesey (David) of Lexington, Ky.; two grandchildren, John Brady and Lynzi
Nicole Justice of Catlettsburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry Rice
(Carol) of Berea, Ky.; her children's father, John Huddy Justice Sr. of
Ashland; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006,
at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Lance Campbell. Burial will be
in Ashland Cemetery.

Samuel J. Pruitt Jr. (1942-2006)
Samuel J. Pruitt Jr., age 63, of Ashland, Ky., died Jan. 16, 2006, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Mr. Pruitt was born Oct. 26, 1942, in Pratt, W.Va.,
and was the son of the late Samuel J. Sr. and Betty Beirne Pruitt.
He was a retired police officer with the Jefferson
County Police Department, was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, attended Mead
Memorial United Methodist Church, was a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge 235
and El Hasa Shrine Temple, was a lifetime member of FOP and a graduate of the
University of Kentucky.
Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Vivian
Watson Pruitt of Ashland; a son, Samuel John Pruitt III and his wife, Jennifer
Nicole, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a daughter, Jennifer Lanham and her husband,
Michael, of Ashland; three sisters, Joyce (George) Barker and Patricia Yancy,
all of Charleston, S.C., and Betty Joe (Eddie) Salyers of Hendersonville,
Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Hollie Nicole (Sweet Baby) Johnson and Zachary
John (My Little Man) Pruitt; and a host of family and friends.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at
Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Raymond Payne.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
